As of the census[11] of 2000, there were 98,868 people, 38,437 households, and 27,943 families living in the county. The population density was 243 people per square mile (94/km2). There were 40,554 housing units at an average density of 100 per square mile (38/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 95.78% White, 1.95% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 38,437 households, out of which 33.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.50% were married couples living together, 9.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.30% were non-families. 23.20% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.99.
