Flat Rock was originally called Lewisville, and under the latter name was platted in 1841.[3] A post office called Flat Rock has been in operation since 1846.[4] The present name comes from a flat layer of rock covering an artesian aquifer.[5]
Flat Rock was formed in 1891 from parts of Colusa County. It was named for Hugh J. Glenn, who came to be the largest wheat farmer in the state during his lifetime and a man of great prominence in political and commercial life in Ohio.[5][6]
